Clinical Services

Clinical transfusion services involve the treatment of various blood disorders. The patients undergo different processes, such as RBC exchange, platelet removal, reduction in blood volume, and plasma exchange, depending upon the conditions to be treated. Blood-related diseases include thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, polycythemia vera, hemophilia, leukemia, and myeloma.

Our Offerings

  • Therapeutic plasma exchange: This process is also known as plasmapheresis. It involves passing the blood through an apheresis machine that separates and removes plasma. The remaining blood returns to the patient along with the replacement fluid, such as albumin or plasma.
  • Therapeutic leukapheresis: The doctor, through this process, removes the white blood cells from the patients suffering from hyperleukocytosis. Hyperleukocytosis is defined as a leukemic blast cell count >100,000/μl. It generally occurs secondary to acute leukemia. Leukapheresis prevents or manages leukostasis syndrome that may occur due to elevated white blood cells.
  • Therapeutic plateletpheresis: It is an important intervention strategy to lower the platelet count in patients. Plateletpheresis treats thrombocytosis in patients with clinical manifestations such as vertigo, malaise, inflammation, and giddiness. It also helps in preventing stroke and ischemia.
  • Red cell exchange: During the red blood cell exchange, the abnormal blood cells from the patients are removed and replaced with the healthy red blood cells from the donors. Red blood cell exchange is generally used to manage sickle cell anemia.
  • Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) with column filtration: The procedure is known as filtration plasmapheresis. The benefits of double filtration plasmapheresis include high selectivity, reduced loss of albumin and non-pathogenic substances, and minimal risk of infection.
  • Therapeutic phlebotomy: The process involves the controlled removal of a significant amount of blood. It is generally used in treating polycythemia vera, porphyria cutenea tarda, and hereditary hemochromatosis (iron overload disorder).
  • Stem cell collection by apheresis: It is the process of obtaining the cells transplanted during bone marrow transplantation. Various types of diseases, such as lymphoma, leukemia, and other cancers, are treated through this procedure.
  • Expert opinion: Expert opinion on hemotherapy is provided to other departments in managing conditions such as Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA).
