India, June 23, 2023: Citizens Specialty Hospital's exceptional Emergency, Critical Care, and Cardiology team recently achieved a remarkable medical feat by saving the life of a 35-year-old male patient. The team's swift and relentless efforts, including one hour of uninterrupted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), played a pivotal role in the patient's survival.
Venkatesh (name changed) a 35-year-old male was experiencing severe chest pain around 5:30 am in the morning for an hour. Upon the patient’s arrival at Citizens Specialty Hospital, the patient was in a critical condition and collapsed in the ER. Recognizing the urgency of the situation Dr Nikhil Bhargav and Dr Priyanka Guntur from Emergency team wasted no time and performed uninterrupted CPR for a full hour and stabilized the patient’s condition.
Following the successful administration of CPR, Dr Sudheer Koganti, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist performed primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI), a procedure to restore blood flow to the heart. After the procedure, the patient was shifted to MICU for observation. Additionally, the patient was placed on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to stabilize the continuous deteriorating condition by Critical Care team. ECMO is a life-saving technology that provides cardiac and respiratory support.
Elaborating on the procedure, Dr Sudheer Koganti, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Citizen Specialty Hospital said, “In cardiac care every minute matters. Through one hour of uninterrupted CPR followed by the timely Primary PCI and utilization of ECMO, we can witness the remarkable potential for saving lives. This combination of advanced interventions and unwavering dedication epitomizes the power of modern medicine in rescuing the most critical patients. This successful outcome is a testament to the exceptional teamwork and expertise of our Cardiology, Critical Care, and Emergency departments.”
Dr Palepu B Gopal, Sr. Consultant, Critical Care Medicine, Citizens Specialty Hospital, said, “Follow-up of resuscitated patient utilizing in-depth knowledge, precision skill and advanced technology are core of critical care practice. This combined approach of our teams compliments the excellent work done by our colleagues. Thereby decreasing the morbidity and improving survival rate of our patients.”
For the next five days, the patient received continuous care and monitoring while on ECMO. The expertise of the hospital's medical staff, coupled with the cutting-edge technology, enabled a gradual improvement in the patient's condition. After this arduous journey, the patient made a remarkable recovery. Venkatesh is currently at home and living a normal life but has to follow a strict lifestyle and control his sugar levels.
Dr Prabhakar P, Regional Chief Operating Officer, said, "The first 60 min after the onset of the heart attack is the “golden hour”.
