Most endocrine diseases can be treated with appropriate therapies. However, it is important to understand the cause of lower or higher hormonal levels. The endocrinologists perform a comprehensive evaluation that may include medical history and laboratory tests before developing an effective treatment strategy.

Some of the common endocrine conditions are diabetes, menopause, Graves’ disease, Addison’s disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, sexual dysfunction, Cushing’s disease, hyperthyroidism/hypothyroidism, Hashimoto thyroiditis, and prolactinoma.

Thyroid disease are classified as follows:

  • Hyperthyroidism: In this condition, the thyroid gland secretes more than normal thyroid hormones. The conditions that may lead to hyperthyroidism are excessive iodine, thyroid nodules, thyroiditis, and Grave’s disease.
  • Hypothyroidism: In this condition, the thyroid gland secretes low levels of thyroid hormones. The conditions that lead to hypothyroidism are iodine deficiency, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and postpartum thyroiditis.

The types of diabetes are:

  • Type 1 diabetes: Type 1 diabetes occurs in patients with significantly low levels or complete absence of insulin. It is considered an autoimmune condition. The immune cells attack the insulin-secreting cells of the pancreas.
  • Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes patients have insulin resistance which means that the body has insulin, but the cells cannot use the insulin.
  • Gestational diabetes: During pregnancy, the body releases hormones that block insulin synthesis, leading to diabetes. Approximately half of the women with gestational diabetes may have type 2 diabetes in the future.

In polycystic ovary syndrome, the females have several fluid-filled sacs in the ovary called cysts. These cysts comprise immature eggs, which are known as follicles. The cause of PCOS is not clear. Patients with PCOS may have irregular periods, elevated androgen levels, and cysts in the ovaries. The possible risk factors for PCOS include insulin resistance, heredity, and low-grade inflammation.
